(Upper Extremity Part #1)
The Shoulder: A One Day Seminar
Eight Continuing Education Hours: $195

If you have taken the Upper Extremity seminar, this class is $125. If you have tested out of the Upper extremity, this class is $100.

If you have taken this class and wish to take the Upper Extremity seminar, the cost for the Upper Extremity seminar is $295. If you have taken both the Upper Extremity and the Call to Arms seminar, the Upper Extremity class is $225.

AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM

The functional anatomy of the shoulder is probably the finest example of integrated systems in the body. When a person abducts the arm, a precise symphony of muscles creates this action. At different points, some muscles are contracting with a precise firing order, while other muscles are just as precisely letting go and lengthening. If any one of those muscles decides not to participate, the integrity and efficiency of the action is compromised (and the symphony sounds more like noise!). To intervene effectively, the therapist must understand how the present system is functioning and know what normal function should be.

THE SHOULDER: A SYMPHONY WITH TWO MOVEMENTS

Part one of the shoulder portion of the seminar looks at the six movements of the scapula and the muscles that create and limit them. After exploring each movement of the scapula, we then correlate scapular movements with humeral movement restrictions which are often the presenting symptom. Freeing the scapular restriction often has a dramatic effect on humeral motion.

Part two of the PNMT Shoulder seminar addresses movement of the humerus. In this section, rotator cuff issues, bursitis, frozen shoulder, and various other shoulder pathologies are explored and treatment strategies are addressed. With precise pretreatment measurements, the therapist has a benchmark to measure success. If the results are not satisfactory, treatment strategies can be altered until full motion and freedom is restored.

Reasoning, Not Recipes

In PNMT, we are committed to creating results for the client, not being married to any specific treatment approach. By focusing on precise assessment and benchmarks, the results of any specific treatment approach are immediately obvious. If the treatment results are less than stellar, we change strategies. This flexibility of approach transcends the therapist from technician to artist, designing each session according to the needs of the client.

IMMEDIATELY APPLICABLE

When you invest in a seminar, we believe you should walk away with a new set of problem solving skills to approach the clients you presently see. With regards to the upper extremity, scenarios like this are common:

* Your client cannot reach behind the back to pull a belt through pant loops. Immediately you address one of two muscles, improving the range. What muscles?
* Your client describes a vague sense of weakness when holding the arm in front of the body. Reaching across the body to the opposite shoulder is also painful. What muscle is implicated?
* Your client presents with what seems to be ulnar nerve entrapment. You immediately address a muscle whose trigger point perfectly mimics ulnar nerve entrapment. What muscle was it?

We welcome you to attend the PNMT Shoulder seminar, one of the most practical seminars you may ever attend. Moving away from recipes and routines, PNMT will drastically increase your problem solving skills, moving from technician to clinical artistry and mastery.

PNMT Shoulder seminar is the first section of our Upper Extremity seminar. (The second section is PNMT for the Arm and Hand. You may take the one day versions of any of our weekend seminars in any order.)

Seminar Objectives

1. Participants will learn to measure humeral motions of forward flexion, abduction and internal / external rotation.

2. Participants will learn the different scapular motions and how they relate to humeral mobility.

3. Participants will learn to treat muscles that restrict various humeral ROM’s

4. Participants will learn to use orthopedic testing to discover red flags for treatments.

5. Participants will learn to assess involved muscles using resistive testing.

6. Participants will learn to use passive ROM to reveal possible intrajoint issues.

7. Participants will learn how muscles play into various shoulder pathologies such as impingement syndrome, Frozen Shoulder Syndrome, and Bursitis.
