In many ways, the lower body is the unsung hero of the muscular system. It has an enormous responsibility in providing both support and locomotion. To effectively treat the lower body, the therapist must understand the relationships and complexities of the musculature. With a balance of hands-on practice time and pertinent lecture, we will address conditions such as piriformis syndrome, various kinds of knee pain, hamstring strains, plantar fascitis, and other common lower extremity pain patterns. We will also explore the role of leg and hip muscles in gait, low back pain, and structural symmetry. The class is filled with practical applications to conditions that are commonly seen in everyday practice. The class is structured upon precise manual techniques for incredibly thorough treatment interspersed with clinical applications to help the therapist know what muscles to treat and why to treat them.

In PNMT, we focus on helping you master the material, not just on presenting it. To that end, we will be evaluating and assessing each participant during the class to check your understanding of the material presented. At the end of class, an open book test will be given to help you clarify what you learned. If you have special needs, please let us know.

Do you know. . .

* how to recognize true hip pathology?
* what really happens during a hip replacement and how that impacts your work? You will see a movie of the replacement procedure.
* when not to treat the SI area?
* when to address the sciatic nerve, and when to immediately refer?
* how to differentiate real plantar fascitis from other conditions that mimic it?
* how to treat peroneal nerve entrapment syndrome?
* how to treat ITB friction syndrome? Who is likely to get it? And why?
* where to treat for lateral knee pain?
* which four structures to treat for medial knee pain?
* how to tell when medial knee pain is serious?
* what muscles affect chondromalacia?
* what the gastrocnemius has to do with foot pain?
* why the soleus causes achilles tendon pain?
* where the watershed area of the achilles tendon is? Why you should know this?
* why the piriformis may not be the structure entrapping the sciatic nerve?
