Massage therapy research, in recent years, has increased in prominence and importance. The American Massage Therapy Association
has created the Massage Therapy Foundation to support research projects and massage therapy schools nationwide are adding
research courses to their curriculum. There are numerous articles being published on massage therapy and its effects. There are two
peer-reviewed journals dedicated to the study of massage therapy and bodywork. This course hopes to add to this growing push to
increase research literacy in massage therapists.
After taking this course students should be able to:
*Define what research is
*Describe why massage therapy research is important
*Explain the difference between research literacy and capacity
*Describe the different categories of research and research components
*Define an independent, dependent, controlled and extraneous variable
*Define a predictive, null and alternative hypothesis
*Understand parts of statistical analysis including p-value, confidence interval and alpha level
*Understand what a randomly controlled trial is and why it is the gold standard
*List the parts of a scientific research paper"
*Use an online database to make simple searches into massage therapy research
*Begin to ask critical questions when reading a research paper
Intermittently throughout the course there will be mini quizzes which the student will have to complete to get credit for the course. These
quizzes are separate from the test and will not be graded, but are required.
